We are looking for a trainee to provide support to the Business Strategy and Project Management division in its key accountabilities, which include, project management, project portfolio management, business analysis, operating model design, and change management. The selected candidate will report to the Head of Business Strategy and Project Management.


The European Stability Mechanism (“ESM”) is the permanent crisis resolution mechanism for euro area countries. It provides financial assistance to Members facing financing difficulties. European leaders have agreed to an expanded mandate for the ESM, which it will implement in the years ahead. The ESM will have a stronger role in the analysis of financial stability risks and design of policy measures in programmes, jointly with the European Commission; it will provide the Single Resolution Board with a financial backstop to support effective and orderly resolution of banks. In the context of the current Covid-19 crisis, the ESM has established a precautionary credit line as one important element in the joint European response to the pandemic.


The ESM is a unique place to work with around 210 individuals from around the world committed to making a difference to the future of the euro area. It recruits talented professionals of any nationality from both the private and public sector. 



The trainee will provide support to the Business Strategy and Project Management division, with a particular focus on the following tasks:

  • Support the development of the division’s capabilities:
    • Work closely with team members and business representatives to review and update  documentation related to the ESM operating model;
    • Support the development of change management capability (e.g. identify roles, methodologies, and/or tools that best fit the ESM’s needs);
    • Help create a PowerPoint presentations’ database, organised by theme, topic, and audience, to create a high quality knowledge base and ensure efficient and consistent communication;
    • Improve collaboration within the division, notably using Microsoft Teams.
  • Support project management and project portfolio management tasks:
    • Contribute to the preparation of reports and documentation for the Corporate Projects Committee;
    • Participate in monthly reviews of projects’ mandatory documentation to ensure each project is in line with the ESM project management framework and governance;
    • Structure and organise the division’s documents in the intranet (SharePoint) to allow  internal stakeholders to easily find relevant information.



  • University degree with a specialisation in business, economics, or other relevant area. Ideally with  a Master’s degree or working towards its completion.
  • A first experience in a consulting firm or in an international financial institution would be an asset.
  • Understanding of project management and organisational change disciplines.
  • Keen interest in the ESM’s mandate and the international and political framework in which it operates.
  • Proficient user of MS-Office, including mastery of PowerPoint. Knowledge of SharePoint and Microsoft Teams would be an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written English skills. Any additional languages would be an asset.
